10 Tips For Home Decorating On A Small Budget

1. Organize – When decorating a room, consider what is already in that room. Every room has “stuff” in it that does not necessarily belong. So ask yourself, does it need to be here? If not, then find a more suitable storage place for it, or throw it out. On the other hand, you might want to look through the stack of daily newspapers and magazines later, but the unsightly pile is getting in the way of your decorative style. Storing them in a classy ottoman would clear the clutter while creating comfortable seating. Either way, your room is clean, neat, and ready for redecorating, at little or no cost.
2. Paint – Color can be one of the most satisfying home decorating components and one of the least expensive. You can paint the whole room, or go for a completely different look by painting one wall a dramatic new accent color.
3. Lighting – Lighting is important to how a room feels, and if yours needs a little updating, instead of buying all new fixtures, try installing a dimmer switch to create a cozy, romantic feeling, or change out the light bulbs; replace regular bulbs with colored bulbs in a child’s room for a “fun” look at a reasonable price.
4. Accessorize – Even if your budget will not allow major changes in your home, you can make minor changes with accessories that will make your rooms look and feel like new. Bring in extra color with accent pieces on the walls, new pillows or throws on the seats, a new runner on the coffee table or mantle. The possibilities are endless.
5. Look-a-like item: Just like buying a pair of knock-off designer shoes, you can find an item similar to the designer model in home decorating, at a fraction of the cost. You can sport the “in” look while sticking to your budget, and no one will be the wiser.
6. Shop around – When shopping for that perfect accent or window treatment do not just go to home decorating stores. Flea-markets, second hand stores and garage sales are great places to find inexpensive items that may be just the thing you need to perk up your living space.
7. Web shop – Go beyond the brick and mortar stores and surf the internet for websites that offer great prices. Be sure to include shipping charges as part of the cost, and when you find a site that includes free shipping, you have hit the jackpot.
8. Use what you already have – Sometimes it’s not a new item that you need to spice up your home, but a revamping of what you already have: your sofa is still structurally sound, it just has faded upholstery, find a snazzy new cover or reupholster it for a completely new look, at a fraction of the cost of replacing it. Remember, spray paint works wonders.
9. DIY – Completing projects yourself can save you buckets of money. Let’s say you want to replace your old bathroom fixtures. Calling a professional plumber could cost you upwards of $75.00/hour, while checking out a book from the library on home maintenance and repair will cost you nothing, and you have the satisfaction of completing the project yourself.
10. Barter - So, you’re not the “handy” type, but you probably know someone who is. Consider work for trade. You can offer to clean or cook, do their taxes, or provide haircuts, whatever you are able to do, while they add the decorative ceiling trim.

Introduce Your Western Decor Into Your Space Without Outdoing Your Budget

When fall hits we feel the cold chill & want to bring in warm colors, cozy bedding & darker accents. We’re not the only ones. It happens every year at this time. You change your cream comforter for the dark chocolate one. You wear your sweats to bed & keep your sweatshirt nearby for the fall morning chill. When Fall hits, there is absolutely something inherently comforting & cozy about dark charcoal, chocolate, deep burgundy’s & many other dark colors. We get that homing & hibernating feel of “gettin’ ready” for the freeze.

We like to change our bedding, our rugs & even our window treatments. It’s not hard, it’s warming. I like to keep my prior years decor stored securely in tight lidded Rubber Maid containers of all sizes & then I always add the new stuff I’ve found when it’s time to re-decorate for the colder months. I you have valances over blinds, it is one of the easiest switches from Spring/Summer to Fall/Winter. Fluff them in the dryer for a few minutes, take the rod down, pull of the old valance & put the new one on. I have found that is one of the easiest & fastest ways to change a room real fast. Then, swap your rugs, throw blankets & throw pillows . Switch your Summer candles & accents to your darker more cozy fall ones. As Christmas grows closer keep your “all winter season” accents packed conveniently so when you want to close your Christmas season everything is handy. Also, keep your Christmas re-packing materials handy. It’s always easier to clean up after if your packing & packaging is organized, close buy & clean. Keep your Christmas gift wrap, ribbon & gift bags closes tightly all year around as there are many elements & critters that can harm them.

Western Home Decorating Has Many Aspects

One way to give your home a warm, comfortable look and feel is with western home decorating. As you might expect, there are some items that depict cowboys and rodeos, but there’s a lot more to it than that. Come along while we explore the wide variety of furnishings and accessories that fit right in with the western style of home decorating.

Whether you just want to add a few decorative pieces here and there, or decorate your entire house, western style décor can add charm and down-home coziness. If you don’t already have a few ideas about the look and feel you want, try browsing through a few home decorating or interior design magazines. Also, print and/or online catalogs from western furnishings stores have lots of ideas and suggestions. No matter where your creative ideas come from, the best advice I can offer is to pick at least a few items that reflect your personal interests and maybe even a side of your personality that others might not be aware of. That makes your room(s) unique while allowing you a perfect opportunity for some self-expression.

One of the great things about western home decorating is that it can be done fairly quickly and in a way to fit almost any budget. Since the flavor and feel of a room usually comes from the accessories and accents, you can often decorate a room without buying new furniture and other high-dollar items. You can create the feel you want with items such as an accent rug or two, a few table decorations, a decorative lamp, sofa or floor pillows, some wall art, and whatever else you want that will match or complement the overall desired ambiance.

Often, a fresh coat of paint on the walls will do wonders for a room. Many people like the living room and other common areas to be somewhat of a neutral color. An off-white, light tan or sand color works well for western style decorating, since those are subdued earth tones. A good paint color for bathroom trim might match something in the natural landscape such as a sky blue, forest green or dusty rose color.

Floors are often overlooked when it comes to decorating, which is a shame because area rugs and accent rugs not only serve a useful purpose, but they might also be considered as art for your floor. Rugs that go great in a western styled room include animal skins (real or faux), rugs with a southwest design, sheepskin rugs, and rugs that depict wildlife or horses. There is also a leather shag rug that is made with strips of suede sewn into a rag rug that would look great in many western rooms.

Lamps and lighting fixtures are an essential part of almost any room, but we sometimes neglect to make them fit in with the overall room décor. There are plenty of lamps and lighting fixtures to choose from, including ones made from antlers or small logs or ones with depictions of western scenes that add interest and visual appeal to the western style of home decorating.

Decorative pillows with a bold design and/or a splash of color might be just right for adding a bit of panache to the room. Bright colors or a bold design on a sofa could overpower the room, but pillows and a few other accessories and accents can give you lots of flexibility to get the overall look and feel you want. You can set the mood of the room to be as wild or as mild as you want.

Some items, such as sofa pillows, floor pillows, or table centerpieces, are usually affordable enough that it might be fun to have one set for everyday use and another set that can be put in place in a matter of minutes when certain guests are expected. That way, you can enhance the “wow” factor to fit the occasion.

Small bronze sculptures or horse figurines are a good example of decorations that you can display on a table, in a curio cabinet, or on a knick-knack shelf. One of my favorite things to display is a baseball-sized geode, which is a certain type of rock that has been cut in half to reveal the crystal formations inside.

Wall art includes paintings, drawings, photographs, and more. No matter how a room is decorated, too much bare wall space can often make a room seem unfinished. Plus, items on the wall can reflect your hobbies or personal interests as well as being decorative. Some of the rugs that have a southwestern design or a depiction of a scenic vista or animals are great for hanging on a wall, like a tapestry. It may sound a little unusual, but even things like samples of barbed wire or different kinds of horseshoes can be mounted and framed to make something that really goes well in a western style room.

Whether you prefer the traditional ranch style of western furnishings or the western style with a contemporary influence for your western home decorating, you can be assured that you’ll have plenty of accessories and accents to select from that offer down-home appeal and casual charm.

Well I’m still working on my Western Home Decor site. I am getting further everyday but it’s a lot of work. Especially when your kids are home on summer break & they always have friends over. It’s hard to be inside when you’d rather be outside.

I will accomplish it though. This home decor thing is a ton of fun to put together.

Soon I hope to get my horse treat business up & running as well. What do you think I should call it? I like Pearson Creek Equine. That name leaves it open in case I want to sell other equine related items in the future.

I also have to come up with names for all my treats. I want to name them all after famous horses & horsemen. Also, I plan to package everything in re-useable containers.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
